Hi, a turnkey solution from eBay (who else?) is about $140 per year... $10 a month?

This is a small price to pay for an already functioning fully fledged ecommerce shop...

However if you want to go down the same route as amazon etc, then be prepared to spend tens of millions of dollars per years to create such a site... thats just the site, let alone getting all the stock and delivery systems in place... legal docs = lawyers = $$$$.

I am currently building an ecommerce site on a $130 per year web server and using a free open source program to run the store... it is called http://www.commercestarterkit.org this is more for experienced web programmers however...

It depends on your budget and your goals, but the eBay shop is a good place to hammer out all the issues you are bound to come across when you build / open your own ecommerce site. Plus you have already got guaranteed traffic via eBay :-)

how does e-commerce help travel and tourism?

Like any form of promotion, it brings more people to a destination and helps launching new destinations. The great advantage of e-commerce is that it's cheaper and it's easier to target a specific audience than other forms of promotion. Also more and more people now use the Internet to book flights and hotels or just to find out about a destination etc and a well developed, search engine optimized, user friendly website and a good e-newsletter can be a huge marketing resource.

Environmental consequences of E-Commerce?

2 parts!

1. What do people feel the environmental consequences of a growing trend in E Commerce are?

2. If a truck travels 50 miles delivering 5 families food shopping, would this create more CO2 than the 5 families cars travelling 10 miles to the food store?

Thanks!

1. Insignificant to posotive. I take your point that it can increase journey times in instances, but largely e-commerce (as you describe it) works from large distribution centres, and utilises existing infrastructure (i.e. postal systems).... more amazon.co.uk than tesco.co.uk - this is where the bulk of transactions are, and they are better than mooving goods into retailers, and having people drive to buy them.

2. Difficult to say! Truck likely more fuel efficent. Tescos do things on routes rather than just backwards and forwards to a store, so its a round trip with many drop offs... you could figure it out mind :)
