Environmental consequences of E-Commerce?

2 parts!

1. What do people feel the environmental consequences of a growing trend in E Commerce are?

2. If a truck travels 50 miles delivering 5 families food shopping, would this create more CO2 than the 5 families cars travelling 10 miles to the food store?

Thanks!

1. Insignificant to posotive. I take your point that it can increase journey times in instances, but largely e-commerce (as you describe it) works from large distribution centres, and utilises existing infrastructure (i.e. postal systems).... more amazon.co.uk than tesco.co.uk - this is where the bulk of transactions are, and they are better than mooving goods into retailers, and having people drive to buy them.

2. Difficult to say! Truck likely more fuel efficent. Tescos do things on routes rather than just backwards and forwards to a store, so its a round trip with many drop offs... you could figure it out mind :)
