What is the average/estimate startup cost for an e-commerce business?

Hi, a turnkey solution from eBay (who else?) is about $140 per year... $10 a month?
This is a small price to pay for an already functioning fully fledged ecommerce shop...
However if you want to go down the same route as amazon etc, then be prepared to spend tens of millions of dollars per years to create such a site... thats just the site, let alone getting all the stock and delivery systems in place... legal docs = lawyers = $$$$.
I am currently building an ecommerce site on a $130 per year web server and using a free open source program to run the store... it is called http://www.commercestarterkit.org this is more for experienced web programmers however...
It depends on your budget and your goals, but the eBay shop is a good place to hammer out all the issues you are bound to come across when you build / open your own ecommerce site. Plus you have already got guaranteed traffic via eBay :-)
