Why has Waitrose done so well in the reccession?
Latest TNS figures show that Waitrose had the highest growth of all supermarkets (12.3%)
Trying to do a market report on the sector. Cant find any suggestion on the internet as to why they have done so well, I cant really go on about the consumer as being extremely price sensitive due to the economic situation when Waitrose are the biggest winners.
It would put it down to the fact that Waitrose has always mainly catered for the higher income earners, it has never been a supermarket the average Joe on minimum wage would normally shop at. Therefore the people that were less hit by the recession ie those who were higher earners to begin with have continued to shop as they normally would. They weren't effected so much by the price rises or spending less on luxury foods. Where other supermarkets who maybe didn't make as much in profit catered for those hit worse by the recession, the minimum and average wage consumers.
