Also does anyone think it is ok to do this myself (I am pretty skint!) or do you really need to pay a proper company. Thanks

If you already have a domain and webhosting installing a ecommerce store is actually pretty easy. There are 2 very good open source ecommerce stores online already. They are OSCommerce and ZenCart. You might want to give them a look.
