Is it wrong to admire things about Enoch Powell?
A Tory MEP who criticised the NHS and praised Enoch Powell in quick succession will not face official censure from his party, it has been revealed.

Daniel Hannan MEP made the comments on US internet television channel reason.tv when he was asked to name his political influences.
He replied: "In the British context, Enoch Powell ... as somebody who understood the importance of national democracy, who understood why you need to live in an independent country and what that meant, as well as being a free marketeer and a small-government Conservative."

A controversial topic, but I do not think that people should be against everything Enoch Powell said despite his racist views on immigration.
Enoch Powell was an intelligent man and a great statesman in his time.
He served bravely in the war, but even then expressed concerns about the degree to which UK might become dependent upon the USA.
He was an effective minister, firstly in the Treasury, then in Health, but by the late 1960s his best days were behind him and he seemed to relish his maverick status and court controversy, never more so than with his "Rivers of Blood" speech.
Those who quote it regularly, and have read it (which is a tiny minority of the "Enoch Was Right" brigade) seem to focus on the allusion to Virgil. Remember, he made this speech not about immigration, but to oppose the 1968 Race Relations Act. He opposed making it illegal to refuse people housing and services on grounds of race, or colour.
I guess the "Enoch Was Right" lot want a return to the days of signs saying "No Blacks, no dogs, no Irish"?
In 1970 he called for UK's unilateral nuclear disarmament. So "Enoch Was Right"?
He finished his political career in the wilderness of Northern Ireland, having rejected an offer from the National Front (just as a young Nick Griffin was joining the racists!), opposing the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Powell was a man of vast intelligence, but not always in touch with the mood of the country. He was not scared to say the controversial, but is sadly remembered for a speech which has been picked up by the racists and the stupid who don't actually understand what it said.
And I can see a lot of them have already answered you!
EDIT: And look! Right on cue! RB is along with his BNP mantra. "Enoch Was Right"
RB, can you explain the allusion that Powell made and how it relates to the context Virgil set it in?
Or do you just want to go and finish your colouring in?
