Anyone have any good suggestions how to start a new mens clothing line? Marketing?
First, what will your function be? Are you a designer? Will you manage the business but have no design experience? Consider how much management knowledge you have. If you are a designer, find some people who know how to write a good business plan. If you are more on the business/management side, find yourself some good freelance designers out there as a start. Regardless, do your homework on what's already out there, and try to find a gap in the marketplace for your business to tap. Most importantly, though, hang on to your current job while you make your new business a success. Most successful entrepreneurs (though there are some cases) do not abandon all sources of income and go cold turkey.
As far as marketing your business, figure out who your target customers are first - and this relates to where the gaps are in the marketplace (usually a combination of age, race/ethnicity, income, body type, style, etc.). Then, tailor your marketing language and your designs towards them (make sure you research what's hot among your target or what's not being addressed!), and look into the best, most affordable (at first) mediums to reach them (like the web, if your target tends to use it - probably the most cost-effective place to build your brand from an awareness perspective - then worry about getting into magazines, retailers, etc).
