Is True a Well Experienced/Motivated Web/Desktop Developer Can Start His Own Career Easily?

I have been told that

"software development equals freedom unlike as other professions such as Accounting, Nursing, etc because all you need to start your own software development career is a PC and the right tools plus the knowledge. Therefore, you can be working full time job as well as marketing yourself aside from your job to build applications/e-commerce applications for clients, working as so can increase your programming knowledge rapidly. On other hand, if you look at the other professions such as Lawyer, CISCO Systems Installer, Bookkeeper, etc, you can't just start your own career easily, you can't build your experience independently, you need to rely on something or somebody who gives you the chance to gain experience..."

You as a professional developer, do you agree with the statement above?

I wont say its easy, being in the IT industry for quite some time now i can say this. Its possible, you can do a full time job gain experience or else no-one will ask you to build anything however good you are, as it cannot be measured.
Experience is very important, once you have gained experience in some domain or Technology you can become a consultant and start on your own.
