why would bricks and mortar businesses add an e-commerce component?

So they can expand their business beyond the local marketplace. Amazon's tool and hardware department started as a North Dakota store called Tool Crib of the North. They expanded to catalog orders, and got so big that Amazon bought them. If they had stayed local, they wouldn't have gotten any notice outside of ND, and they'd just be another struggling business.
