What are the advantages to using Ruby on Rails over a CMS to build an e-commerce site?
Actually, CMS systems, such as Drupal, have e-commerce modules. In fact, there is also a new one being developed that looks promising, http://www.ubercart.org/compare_ubercart_ecommerce. As for RoR, a nice example lives here: http://www.wineq.com/. Utlimately, either is useable - I am just looking for information perhaps from someone who has experience with both or some concrete advantages I could look at and consider. Thanks very much for your time.
i'm no ror expert but ror is just a web development framework. it provides a language and method for expediating the programming of a web application.
a cms is nothing to do with ror. it is a concept relating to the management of documents, either web or native. a cms can be native to an os or web based, such as drupal.org.
your question therefore does not quite make sense in that you cannot compare a web framework to a cms. they are not alike. the only way you could make them alike is to say "should i program my own cms using ror". if that's your question then i am sure you could but there are many open source options already out there to look at.
