What is the very best argument for Net Neutrality?
Right now, Im unsure about net neutrality. I been reading up on the topic and these are my thoughts so far:
Net Neutrality laws, although they helped create the internet, are not a good idea for the future of it. Right now, the pipes of the internet are getting rusty and stuffed up. We need to upgrade to fiber optics which will make the internet 45 times faster than it is now. The big phone companies have said they would pour billions into making this faster internet only if they get the right to charge people different prices. The people in favor of net neutrality have said the companies would discriminate. But this seems unlikely because it would be a free market and competition will help keep things fair and you still have choices. There are a lot of other things against net neutrality.
Basically, I would appreciate it if someone could clarify Net Neutrality for me and to challenge all the arguments made in this article: http://www.city-journal.org/html/eon2006-06-28ba.html
“The providers have no incentive to kick anybody out,”
What, money isn't an enough incentive? Yeah right.
"Competition will give providers a positive incentive to stay honest."
Competition, what competition? The competition is a telco and a cable co (and that competition will last only until AT&T achieves total world domination). All an internet company like Google would have to do is give a few billion dollars to the telco AND a few bill more dollars to the cable co.
Then the internet user can choose DSL or he can choose cable. Regardless of which he chooses. When he types Yahoo.com into his browser, he will redirected to Google.com. The free internet will be dead.
