What Is A E-commerce

I am trying to start up an e-commerce business. What is the best way of getting it known out there?

This is a Online computer shop (i know.. another one) that i started just to see if i could create the website from scratch.
Now i want to take it further by actually putting it on the web.

Can you please tell me what the most effective way to get it known to internet users is?

And i am also looking at giving cutomers a promotional item (such as a pen or keyring with my logo on it) when they first purchase a product. What would you recommend for this? (Any links to Australian Suppliers of your recommended item would be great if you have one)

You run ads, free or paid, and do mailings. You have to give someone something for free just to get them to visit your website. You submit your site to the search engines but you won't show up until after you are getting a lot of hits. People don't buy from a free website so you need to get a domain and host. It takes months unless you have megabucks and can pay for ads on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. A lot of free stuff is at http://ewebsmith.com
