Is anyone here a member of The Standardbred and Trotting Horse Association or own a Standardbred?
A friend of mine at my yard has bought a horse from a market as a future horse for his son but, the horse is too big for the son, and too small for the father. There's a chance I'll be the one riding it. I've searched his name on the internet and he could be a standard bred/trotting horse. I'd really like it if someone could look him up for me please?
Also; anyone who owns a standardbred, any tips or things I should expect?
Thank you in advance!
Well, by searching his name I found a previous advert for him.
"Standard Bred Trotting Assoc.GB00Y707"
I should mention, I'm in the UK.
NZ gave you some good info. An important thing to work on is collection. That will help a lot when you begin to ask for a canter or other gaits. (Generally both trotters and pacers can be taught to rack).
More information on retraining a STB is at http://horseadoption.com/training-tips/
Do you have the freeze brand or tattoo of the horse? Most Standardbreds have a lip tattoo if they are older or are freeze branded. Once you find that number you can look it up on http://pathway.ustrotting.com/search/index.cfm and get more info on your horse. It is possible that a pure Standardbred isn't freeze branded or tattooed if he was never intended for the track.
EDIT: Unfortunately it doesn't look like the UK Standardbred Org. is as helpful as the US one. It looks like you can get information on your horse at http://www.standardbred.org/amember/ but they require a £10 membership. The US one will at least give you basic information for free of course they charge for anything above basic info :)
I checked w/ the US trotting site on the off chance he ever raced in the US and it doesn't appear he has.
http://www.bhrc.org.uk/links.php might also be a good place to start. Without going into the google cache the bhrc only has the current year so you can't pull up the past when he was racing. You might be able to email them for more information though.
I didn't find much online, but I was able to pull this out of the google cache:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:nXh6qiv1O4cJ:www.bhrc.org.uk/horse_perfs.php%3Fletter%3DS%25+%22SPRING-CRUISER%22+standardbred+UK&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a
One thing I did find looking through the old site via the google cache :) is this info. It isn't a lot, but it might help:
Horse: Spring Cruiser Grade: 0Past Races:
Chip No: 985120019522370Best Time: 99 M 99.99s
YOB: 2000 Colour: DB Sex: Last Race Date: 01/01/1970 Prize Totals: 0
Sire: crabby yankee (usa)Dam: spring taurus
Owner: Mr Robert S VaughanTrainer: Mr Robert S Vaughan
Entry 1. Spring Cruiser - NOT QUALIFIED
Entry 1. Spring Cruiser - NO RACE FEE
So it sounds like the horse never raced (race date before he's born and the best time doesn't make sense).
Since Crabby Yankee is a US horse I was able to find some information on him.
CRABBY YANKEE (G04817,H) [ 1988 , P , 3 , 1:52.4M $122,165]
COLT FORTYSIX - MY OWN YANKEE - NERO
It looks like he raced from 1990-1995 about 20 starts each year.
